Manly Mondays: Bros Being Basic on Instagram

manlymondays

One of the tenants of “basicness” is (apparently) an affinity for stereotypical posts on Instagram of things like Starbucks lattes, nature shots and Healy Hall.

For those of you who don’t know, Instagram is a platform that allows, and sometimes encourages, even the most manly bros to sway towards “being basic.”

The quest for likes on a post brings out throwbacks, pet pictures, sunsets and Christmas cards. While I will admit to being guilty to posting (almost) all of the above, someone has decided to compile the most basic bros on Instagram, and I haven’t quite made the cut. I present to you: Bros Being Basic.

This account is made up of fan-submitted pictures, and the bros out there have not disappointed.  Here are some of 4E’s favorite submissions from the broiest bros of the web.

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 2.41.10 PM

While most bros will take a solid Christmas card picture with their “boys”, these guys pulled off one of my favorites.

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 3.05.40 PM

One of the original submissions to the account, I guess everyone is thankful for Ryan Gosling, even if they won’t admit it publicly.

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 3.06.08 PM

Just a couple bros out bro-skating on their bro date. Nothing wrong with that.

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 3.06.43 PM

The classic “we are all dressed up nicely, so let’s take a picture of us jumping in the air.” Doesn’t get more “basic” than that. Except…

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 2.40.09 PM

Cheesy/heartwarming caption? Check. Matching outfits? Check. Unbelievable sunset and scenery? Check and check.  Could this be the most “basic” photo any bro has ever posted? Possibly. However, they just set the bar incredibly high for what constitutes a good ‘Gram.

Think you and your bros have what it takes to be featured with other Bros Being Basic? Submit a picture to [email protected], and maybe you’ll be featured in a Manly Monday someday.

5 Ways to Get in the Holiday Spirit at College

elf-1

Here at 4E, we rejoice in all things Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza-related. Not even the soul-crushing Grinch that is Lau during finals can bring down our holiday spirits. This week, we did some Pinterest trolling (instead of our long list of papers) for the best DIY ways to celebrate the holidays at college and spread some joy.

tumblr_myckldVOnf1rawb5do1_5001.  Drink Nutella Hot Chocolate

Why waste precious Facebook stalking study time on the last-call Mug line (#ugh) when you can make your own unbelievably good – and easy – hot chocolate? Seriously, this is doable even in a common room kitchen. Just heat milk until steaming in a saucepan on medium-high heat, then whisk in two tablespoons of Nutella until dissolved. Pour in a thermos, add some whipped cream and chocolate syrup, and you’re ready to go! Buddy the Elf approved.

nutella-hot-chocolate-tall2 2.  Make Holiday Cookies

This next one is slightly more complicated, but equally delicious. Nothing says “Ho Ho Ho” quite like Christmas cookies. If you don’t lose your self control at the sight of Pillsbury’s holiday themed slice-and-bakes, something is wrong with your childhood (or you’re just not an obese American #sorrynotsorry).

tumblr_lebsdnhbUK1qfpcniFor those with more gourmet tastes, we recommend these hot cocoa cookies with chocolate chunks and marshmallows melted on top. Find the recipe here, then wipe the drool off your face.

hot-cocoa-cookies-final-1-f 3.  Create a DIY Christmas Tree from Lights

The drab plaster and fluorescent lights of most dorm rooms can sometimes make it hard to feel like you’re walking in a Winter Wonderland during the holiday season. Get two for the price of one by building a Christmas tree on your wall out of twinkle lights! Bonus points if you hang up some homemade ornaments.

12b283f32f8f9c77ee5c87b26ce344414.  Build a Solo Cup Wreath

In case your neighbors didn’t already know you #rage, make a holiday wreath from red solo cups to hang on your door. Tape cups together in the arrangement of your choosing and finish it off with a nice big bow. Also, it’s a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle!d4dadf667bb09380eabd8bdaeac77f135. Take a Christmas Card Instagram

Like Friendsgiving, but with the extra ego boost that is breaking your likes record. Get your closest friends or roommates, grab some Santa hats and ugly holiday sweaters, and gather round for a snapshot in the jolliest pose you can think of. Nothing says, “We know the true meaning of Christmas,” quite like fighting over which filter makes you look most tan.

So bring some cheer to your finals season the 4E way. When in doubt, quote Elf and eat tons of chocolate.

Jack the Bulldog Is Killing the Insta Game

hi2jacksApparently Jack the Bulldog is a real Instagram expert. His most recent instas are praisewothy and 4E enjoys praising. So here they are:

We really enjoyed Jack’s Halloween costumes but his Instagram captions made them even better.

We also love Jack because he addressed Kim Kardashian’s scandal-inducing gluteus maximus via Instagram. #breaktheinternet

The 10 #Basic Commandments of Fall

Basic Fall

Fall is undoubtedly the greatest season of all: The leaves start to change colors, Starbucks releases its seasonal drinks and, of course, Halloween and Thanksgiving are just around the corner. Naturally, the beautiful autumn backdrop and seasonal traditions lend themselves to the perfect Instagram (with the right filter), which is sure to rack up the likes. So really, it comes to no one’s surprise that fall is a  #basicgirl’s favorite season.

As you have most likely noticed, the #basic movement has definitely taken over the Hilltop as the aroma of artificially scented pumpkin everything fills the air and infinity scarves are in abundance. After noticing the trend, you may find yourself asking, “WOW! What can I to do to become more #basic?” If this applies to you, then we here at 4E have some answers, as we’ve compiled the 10 Commandments of Being #Basicinthefall.

1. Thou shall visit a pumpkin patch for the sake of a new profile picture (which thou shall delete if it does not get enough likes).

2. Thou shall go “apple picking” at least once and Instagram the entire excursion because thou shall always #doitfortheinsta.

3. Thou shall not pick more than three apples when “apple picking”, because excessive apple picking detracts from picture taking time.

4. Thou shall instill creativity in your Halloween costumes.

5. Thou shall honor the sacred combination of riding boots, vests and flannels and this shall be worn at least three times a week.

6. Thou shall purchase an abundance of fall scented Yankee Candles, for which your roommate will surely thank you.  Permitted scents include: Apple Pumpkin, Season’s Blessings, Cozy Sweater, November Rain and Autumn Wreath (and yes, these scents actually do exist).

7. Thou shall partake in an extravagant Friendsgiving feast … in your dorm.

8. Thou shall channel your inner Martha Stewart and try every fall related recipe on Pinterest for your aforementioned feast.

9. Thou shall go out of your way to crunch every dead leaf you encounter on your walks to and from class, which is sure to be a nuisance to all other passersby’s.

10. Thou shall spend at least half of your flex dollars at the Leavey Starbucks this season exclusively on Pumpkin Spiced Lattes and Salted Caramel Mochas.

So there you have it 4E readers, a whole set of #basicguidelines. Hopefully, it will help you embark on your #basicjourney to become a #basicHoya. Good luck!

Perez Hilton Spends the Fourth in DC

perez

Yesterday, while you were celebrating America, Perez Hilton was taking in the sites of Georgetown and Washington, D.C. Before venturing over to Georgetown, the celebrity blogger spent time at some of D.C.’s most popular tourist attractions on July 3 and 4. He posted the picture below to his Instagram account of him with his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, and his 1-year-old son, Mario Armando Lavandeira III,  at the Capitol.

Later in the day, Hilton visited some of Georgetown’s classic spots. He conquered the Exorcist Steps:

He was put off by the line outside of Georgetown Cupcake. Clearly no one told him about Baked and Wired:

And he had the same thoughts we all have when walking past the gigantic townhouses in Georgetown — I wish I could live here:

Finally, he made his way to campus and was as impressed as we all were the first time we saw Healy:

He showed off his patriotism on the lawn:

We can’t think of a better way to spend the Fourth of July than visiting Georgetown’s campus — good choice, Perez.

It’s just a regular Monday here on the Hilltop. The witches hats have been hung up, and the goblins have all been put to rest. But this weekend, the Hoya Instagram feed was full of toil and trouble. Let’s recap on a few Instagram users’ celebration of the holiday:

Let’s start off with brnstbrz’s impeccable face paint job that has all those easily-scared souls calling for their mummies.

On the other end of the spectrum, morganlwright’s costume is a mixture of sugar, sweet, and a whole lot of sass.

Check out _margoyle_’s execution of this spectacular science pun. You’re right, virgfar, it is brilliant.

Meggs_benedict kept things in the academic realm, channeling her literary side with her rendition of The Scarlet Letter. 104 likes later, she’s definitely caught the attention of 4E.

No matter their costumes, Hoyas geared up for a weekend of tricks and treats. Legooo is right, eewilcox3!

InstagraMondays: What a Beautiful Sunset Edition

If you hadn’t noticed by either looking outside or scrolling through your own Instagram feed, there was a pretty spectacular sunset this past Monday evening. So, of course, every Hoya and their uncle snapped a quick photo and put it on their Instagram. You probably thought you were artsy and original, huh? Wrong. We at The Fourth Edition were stalking your every move, compiling your “one-of-a-kind” sunset photos in all their glory. Take a look at just a few of the many, many sunset pictures from yesterday evening:

First, we start off with the standard sunset photo. And we agree sultankhayarin, it is romantic in the fall.

photo 4

Moving on to Exhibit B: Sunset with buildings. Is that Leo’s that we spy in the background? And also, elenarachelsnow, we’re sorry you have to take midterms. But we do have some tips to get through them.

photo 2

Gravissimo got funky with a sunset photo of Dahlgren’s belfry… which caught the attention furniture_assembly_contractors, among others.

photo 4

Not to be outdone, paree_dc snapped a photo of the sunset on M Street. And just to clarify, it was without a filter.

photo 2

Sezenoktem took a similar approach, but also got a moving Circulator bus in the shot.

photo 3

There would be only one way to take it to another level: by snapping a sunset photo of Healy Hall. Jwilljuice, we just can’t get enough either.

photo 3

But there was one sunset photo that took the cake. Theyiranator just took it home with the trifecta: Healy Hall, Sunset and Lau Steps. #Classic – or as theyiranator said herself – “#instagood”.photo 1

Be sure to keep an eye out for any more sunsets, be sure to keep posting those photos and be sure to check out next week’s installment of InstaMondays – only on 4E!
