Econ Crushes: 7 Ways to Tell if They Mean True Love

ECONcrush

Ladies and Gents, gents and ladies, fellow Hoyas and fellow Hoya followers: Love is in the air.

With just a mere 8 or so weeks left of the semester, you may or may not be realizing that the time you spend gazing at your star crossed lover in Econ is soon coming to an end. Face it: it’s time to make your move.

He/She has stolen your heart through long weeks, problem sets and midterms already… don’t lose your opportunity to seal the inevitable deal. We here at 4E understand if you’re reluctant to swoop in; how can you be sure if he/she is into you?! Well, we have the answers!

giphy-4

1. Eye Contact. Perhaps you were staring longingly at the glorious curves of their face, in the middle of a daydream about your future family, or simply scanning the room when your eyes met theirs; whatever the occasion was, catching he/she in the act is a sure sign of their undying love for you!

Next Steps: When this happens (which of course it will) don’t miss your opportunity to clarify your acknowledgement with a nice subtle wink! Make sure to make it extra obvious so that he/she knows it is meant for them!

giphy-3

2.  Have you had another class together before? Boys and girls, here is a major sign that his or her obsession with you is equivalent to your own with them! Why else would they be taking macro this semester other than the fact that they took micro with you the semester before?!

Next step: Write them a handwritten note (it must be in cursive) to let them know that you know that they are stalking you. Make sure to let them know that you’re OK with it though and use this opportunity to share your mutual love for them.

giphy-5

3. The “Sup Nod” Test. Perhaps, you and him/her have mutual friends, have talked at a party once or reviewed an iClicker question together and your relationship has reached the occasional “sup nod” phase. This means that in passing you are both comfortable and eager to acknowledge each other. To some this may seem like only a friendly gesture shared between acquaintances, but don’t be fooled. That simple tilt of the head is more similar to a mating call than to an innocent form of acknowledgement.

Next Step: Be bold and swoop in. As soon as this action takes place, get as close as you can to him or her, stare into their eyes and align your steps with theirs. The rest will follow.

4. Did you bump into each other? It could have been anything from a gentle brush of the shoulder to a full on fall-on-your-face fiasco – any physical contact is a sure sign of physical desire…. of course, right?

Next Step: Make it happen again. The first bump may have seemed to be only a coincidence to your soon to be lover, in order to ensure that he/she knows it was in fact fate you need to make sure that it happens again. Plan a methodical collision for your next class. Scope out where he/she is sitting and deliberately time your departure for class. Untie your shoe and give yourself at least 4 feet to fall flat out on this person. Once this happens your love will be certain.

giphy-2

5. Note Sharing. Has this person ever asked or offered to share/compare notes? This is major. If this event has taken place, it is a sure sign that not only do they trust your competency and intelligence, but they’re probably into you. Let’s be honest, asking for help is the clearest indicator that a person is looking for more than answers to their recitation worksheet.

Next Steps: Use this opportunity to share a little more than just the answers/mathematical garbage. For example: (x + y) = you and me on a long walk on a beach in the sunset with our children for the rest of our lives and eternity.

giphy-1

6. Sits in your row. If he/she sits in your row week after week take this as a deliberate sign of their undying love for you. Even if this is a result of your incessant stalking/ premeditated effort to be close by, because they have not moved away they are likely on mutual ground.

Next Steps: Scoot closer. Each day make an effort to sit at least one seat closer to this person. Even if the same people sit in the seats between you all everyday. It’s fine. Once you’ve finally reached the next seat over spend your classes inching closer to him/her. By the time you are in this person’s lap you will most likely be engaged.

giphy-6

7. Avoids you. The last and most sure sign that shows that a person is into you is avoidance. This is an instinct we are all made aware of at a young age. If a person seems to ignore your hellos, sits at the far end of the room from you or simply is caught up in their phone every time you are around, it is very likely that they are just too nervous to contact with you.

Next Steps: Ease this person’s discomfort with persistence. Stand by them as much as possible and their sense of security will grow. Follow them around campus or search for their NetId! If you don’t have access to their phone number, send them e-mails frequently with one or two words. This will add to the mystery while allowing the person to grow comfortable with your interactions.

The clock is ticking my friends. Be bold, be fearless, get the guy/girl.

Calling All Women & Men for CATS

catcafes

Calling all cat lovers, cat ladies, cat men, college students who miss their furry friends back home and essentially all gentle cuddle-loving human beings: 4E has BIG news for you.

CAT CAFEs are the newest, trendiest, most happening places around and we have one coming our way to DC!

tumblr_nb0mc0JfRR1siilpjo1_500

Crumbs & Whiskers, while not yet having an official location or opening date set, is advising prospective visitors to “BE EXCITED!” as there are full-fledged plans underway to bring a cat cafe here to the district. If you’re wondering what exactly this might entail, here is their blurb:

“Crumbs & Whiskers brings together some amazing things. Specifically coffee, tea, desserts, and you guessed it…cats! DC’s cat cafe will serve as a foster home for the Washington Humane Society’s shelter cats and as a really fun place to hang out for DC residents. The concept is pretty simple. Cats in cages are sad, so we get them out of there. Anyone without a cat is sad (or should be), so we hook them up. Then, we give everybody desserts and coffee and tea. The end.”

So pretty much it’s going to be the perfect venue for all things/moods: lonely, happy, sad, cuddly, first date(?) and even a space to add a new member to your family!

tumblr_static_cute-cats-cats-33440930-1280-800

Should you be worried that the prospect of a cat cafe might be an evil plot to exploit cats, fear not. Crumbs & Whiskers benefits not only its customers, but also its furry felines whose alternative would be a lonely cage. Being a cat at the cat cafe is a huge opportunity for our cat friends, as it greatly increases their chances for adoption! And YOU could be the adopter (I mean within or without respect to you campus housing codes).

If you are considering taking home a furry friend, know that adoption is not done on the spot, but through the Washington Humane Society – so at the least know that your decision will not be one done out of drunkenness.

Other important details to know:

  • No unsupervised kids under 12 (so basically like a 13+ cat club)
  • You must sign a waiver ( cats are animals capable of scratches and such)
  • Flash photos are not allowed for the safety of the cats
  • AND you must resist the urge to pet cats when they are asleep (r-e-s-p-e-c-t)

giphy-5

To visit the Cafe: Reservations will be made in 30 or 60 minute increments and there will be a cover charge. Walk-ins are welcome if there is space. If someone does not show for a reservation availability will be made known via twitter. You may also schedule private events…team bonding, group study or birthday party???

Snacks & such will be prepared at a separate partner location and will likely be complimentary.

AND for those of you that are really into it- A GentleMeows Club will welcome feature members!!! (Yay exclusivity)

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR DC’S SOON-TO-BE NEWEST THING

Hump Day Chomp: Pho DC

humpdaychomp

If you’re one of the lucky few that are planning a Valentine’s Day Date, look no further than Pho DC in Chinatown.

We stumbled upon this Vietnamese gem last weekend while looking for Rita’s Italian Ice (which, by the way, is CLOSED for the winter – what the what?!?).

After having our ice dreams dashed, we walked up the block looking for something to eat/somewhere to cry when my date stopped short and asked if I had ever had Pho – which is pronounced “f-uh,” not “faux.”

I hadn’t, so we climbed the four steps up to the well-lit and sophisticated restaurant and the rest is history.

g1-01

I ordered Spicy Satay Pho Tai, which is basically a lot of broth mixed with chili paste, thinly sliced beef, cooked onions and thin rice noodles. You get to use chopsticks to scoop the noodles and stuff into this awesome mini-ladle. It was tough, but it got easier as the night progressed. My date had Spicy Pho Shrimp, which actually had a good amount of shrimp. The only annoying thing was that the tails had not yet been removed. Both dishes came with little bowls of basil, bean sprouts and lime that could be added to the soup.

The real winners were the sauces: one spicy orange sauce that tasted like sriracha on steroids, and one sweet brown sauce that was like a thicker, sweeter soy sauce. These were magical when added (in small dollops) to the spoonfuls of noodles.

We also tried Vietnamese Coffee, which is really rich coffee that has condensed milk at the bottom. You can stir the milk until the coffee reaches its optimum level of sweetness and pour it over ice if you wish (we wished, and it was delicious).

This place had it all – great music, wonderful food, fun atmosphere. It was also really easy to get to – just a couple of blocks from the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop. Pho DC is pho-sho one of the best places you can have Valentine’s Day dinner (or anti-Valentine’s day dinner) this weekend!

Find Love Here: 4E Date Suggestions

jefferson-memorial-at-cherry-blossom-timeWhat is that? What is that feeling in the air? What is that crisp breeze blowing among the tulips? What is that fluttering in my chest when I walk outdoors? Could it be allergies?

No. The answer, my friends, is love. Love is in the air. In the words of Mark Twain, “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want — oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

Mark_Twain_by_Abdullah_Frères,_1867
Thanks, Mark.

Here at 4E, we understand that spring fever is in the air, and we love it just as much as we love Beyoncé references and Burnett’s beverages. For that reason, we’d like to take a few moments to help you Hoyas out. We understand that it’s springtime and we know that you’re madly in love. So we’ve compiled this list of nearby spots for you to take your blossoming romances.

Places to Go For a D.C. Springtime Date:

1. The Washington Monument

Yes, the renovations are finally complete! That means that you and your significant other can officially purchase tickets and have a romantic monument date beginning on May 12. What says “I love you” more than hiking up 897 steps in D.C. humidity? That’s right: nothing.

puro22. Puro Cafe Garden

I don’t like giving this one away because Puro Cafe is my favorite Georgetown “secret.” Located at 1529 Wisconsin Ave. NW, this small Mediterranean tapas bar not only has unbelievable service and delicious food, but also features a beautiful outdoor garden. Sangria in the shade with the sweetie? Sounds like a date to me.

3. The Potomac Heritage Trail

The views are unbelievable. The memories are unforgettable. The romance is undeniable. Nothing says the perfect nature date like a hike on the Potomac Heritage Trail. Located just across the Key Bridge, this hiking path is fun and beautiful  just like you and your significant other. (Not looking for such a far walk? Head over to Teddy Roosevelt Island for similar forest fun without the distance!)

4. National Harbor

national_harbor_nightNothing is more romantic than a water taxi ride on the Potomac under the soft, starry skies. For $16, get a roundtrip ticket from the Georgetown Waterfront to National Harbor. While there, take advantage of the delicious food and stunning nightlife. Want to dance the night away with your beau? Head to Pose Ultra Lounge at the Gaylord National Hotel  the view is stunning! And for those of you who aren’t yet 21, be sure to take a ride on the Capital Wheel, coming to the Harbor in May.

5. The Leavey Esplanade

Trying to heat up your love life without burning a hole in your wallet? We get it (and so does Alicia Keys). Walk upstairs onto the Leavey Esplanade for a sweet, cost-effective date. A simple picnic underneath the moonlight is the perfect way to end a busy springtime week. Bonus points: Bring a guitar and serenade your special someone.

Happy dating, Hoyas. May love and luck be on your side.

Valentine’s Day: Single Style

Take a moment from reading this blog post and freeze. Stop whatever you’re doing and just sniff the air in front of you. What do you smell? Love? Happiness? Chocolates? Now, what do you see? Was that Cupid just buzzing by? Did you just get hit by some little flickering hearts? Is Celine Dion singing a ballad that gently tugs at your heartstrings? Do you feel the love? Want some Candy Hearts? Will you be my Valentine?

If your answer is no to these questions, this post is for you. Here are the “Top Five Things to Do on Valentine’s Day if You’re Angry, Bitter and/or Most Importantly, Single”:

5. Get drunk and sit on John Carroll’s lap Don’t have a date for this year’s V-Day? Neither does Johnny-boy! John Carroll is faithful and committed, and you know exactly where to find him. He’s smart, sturdy and above all, loves it when people sit on his lap …

4. Crash the Interhall Housing Mixers I know you’ve seen the fliers. These events might be for people without roommates, but they’re also perfect for people without Valentine’s Day dates. So if you’re single and ready mingle, get dressed up and bring your A-Game. Or your C+ Game? Or look for a roommate? I don’t know.

3. Have a date with yourself That’s right. Stay in your room. Don’t wear pants. Eat three tubs of Ben & Jerry’s. Cry a little bit. Stop crying. Watch your favorite movies. Eat your feelings some more. Just celebrate being you.

2. Go to Cafe Milano and wait for a celebrity to come and get you I’m dead serious, though. Bradley Cooper was just there. George Clooney is always there. Every celebrity on Earth goes there. Basically, if you go to Cafe Milano, you will fall in love with an A-list star. It’s like waiting for a knight in shining armor, but instead of being locked in a castle, you’re being pampered and eating a veal chop.

1. Don’t do anything at all Be a normal person. Stop getting so caught up over Valentine’s Day and just treat it like Thursday. As in, Thirsty Thursday. As in, you know what that means

Activities for You and Your Cold Weather Crush

Feeling cold? There’s nothing like body heat to do the trick, so why not grab a date to keep you warm? I mean, come on guys, it’s simple science. As the leaves fall away and we’re left with a cooler climate to contend with, take solace in all the new date possibilities that become available. So make yourselves available… winter wonder is in store for all of you.

  1. Ice Skating: Girls, we know you (thought you) were a figure skater when you were just younger, show off those figure eights. Guys, your move is not having any moves, do you need to hold on tight to keep yourself from falling (head over heels)? The tighter the better… or if you’re both skating aficionados, there’s always room for a little friendly competition to bring people together. Racing anyone?
  2. Coffee: It’s cold, you need something warm, and just like in the movies you get asked out for a coffee date. It’s simple, it’s casual, and it’s cute. Do it. Nothing like watching the snow fall with a hot drink in your hand. Hot chocolate is also always an option. As is Irish coffee: nothing like a little alcohol to spice things up.
  3. Sea Catch: Good food. Fireplace. Done. Talk a walk by the canal when you’re done eating for some prime hand holding time.
  4. Movies: We all know what Christmastime means: movie releases. Not what you were thinking? Oh… Well then. Take a date to the movies for some cold air relief. It’s dark, you get to sit…. The upsides are endless.
  5. Concerts: Hit up the 9:30 club for some awesome shows. Nada Surf, G. Lov and Special Sauce (saucy!), and Alex Clare are in the next month’s line up. As you dance and sing along in a crowd of people, pushed together by the mosh pit, you can’t help but enjoy. You might want to skip Purity Ring’s performance… no no we kid.

I just wanted to let you guys know that in researching this article someone suggested strip bowling as a date idea, yep, take that for what you will, whatever it may be.

Stay warm, stay toasty, here here to winter cuddling, snuggling, and all around debauchery.

Last Minute Valentine

by Michelle Cassidy

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. While some hyperorganized couples have had plans set since Christmas break, there are plenty of people scrambling to pull together a romantic Tuesday evening at the last minute. Lucky for you, 4E is here to help. We’ve assembled some last minute Valentine’s Day suggestions that will make it look like you’ve been planning for weeks, instead of 24 hours before the big day.

Take it Outside The forecast for tomorrow calls for warmer weather than we’ve had for the last couple days, so how about a romantic picnic? Pack a blanket, some snacks and some hot chocolate (or champagne) and find somewhere private. Head up to the Observatory garden or down to the waterfront and set up camp. Be sure to bring an umbrella in case of rain, or be prepared to recreate a famous romantic moment.

Top Chef It may be too late to get a reservation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t share a delicious dinner. Get yourself up to Safeway and grab ingredients for a dinner for two. Even if you’re not a skilled cook, it’s the thought that counts! And it’s a much better alternative to a Leo’s date.

Movie Night Get a selection of romantic movies and some popcorn, and spend the night in. Movies like Casablanca, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Titanic and The Princess Bride are all great options (but there are tons more out there).

Head Downtown There are plenty of date-appropriate spots downtown (and no, we’re not necessarily talking about the monuments). The Botanic Garden has a permanent rose exhibit, perfect for February 14th. If flowers aren’t your thing, the ice rink in the Sculpture Garden is still open too.

An Old Standby There’s a reason that flowers and chocolate are the traditional Valentine’s Day gift. Head down to Dean & Deluca on M Street to pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers and some fancy chocolates. If that’s a little pricey for you, Safeway also has a nice selection of both.
