Tomorrow is not just any regular old Tuesday – it’s IHOP National Pancake Day!

Yes, it’s true. Tomorrow, Mar. 3, your local IHOP is offering a free shortstack of its delicious buttermilk pancakes FO’ FREE.

But why? Well, IHOP is encouraging donations from each customer for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other specified charities.

Where is our local IHOP? There are two nearby-ish ones: 935 N Stafford St. in Arlington, or 3100 14th St. NW in the District.

Maybe you’re still not convinced that you should go. Have you seen these pancakes?

So yeah, you want to get yourself to IHOP tomorrow. The event runs from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Because breakfast doesn’t have to be limited to the morning.

Midnight Breakfast Is Here

Tonight is the annual midnight breakfast at the fabulous O’Donovan’s on the waterfront (aka Leo’s). Students from all over campus will gather to enjoy the coolest meal of the day.

The midnight breakfast starts at 10 pm and is open to all students who show a GoCard. That means that a meal plan is not required. Warning: this event gets crazy crowded, so make sure to think through your plan of action.

Some cool things about the midnight breakfast:

  • The event is in the upstairs of Leo’s. The whole level will be decked out in all sorts of Christmas cheer. You can expect wreaths, maybe some tinsel and definitely some Christmas carols.
  • They use disposable dishes and cutlery. No searching for clean bowls!
  • The food is really good. I don’t know how or why, but something about eating breakfast food at 10 p.m. makes everything better. The pancakes are fluffier, the bacon is crispier – the food just tastes better.
  • There will probably be French Toast sticks. A delicacy of years past, French Toast sticks have only been present at breakfast a pitiful 3 times this semester. If Leo’s has any left (which they probably do, since they never serve them), you can expect platters and platters of this fine food. (Note: 4E is not promising French Toast sticks, just predicting. And hoping.)
  • The food is served by Georgetown professors. There are two long tables manned by a few of our favorite professors dishing out the breakfast entrees. This is the perfect time to ask questions about your exams and papers (jk, don’t be that guy) or questions about your professors’ personal lives.
  • Dessert. Leo’s always does dessert pretty well, but the snacks at midnight breakfast are on a totally different level. There is also a lot of fresh fruit.

Why should you go to Midnight Breakfast?

One word: Finals.

We all need a break, and food is a great way to help the struggle. As the age-old adage says, “There is no problem that a little bacon can’t solve.”

Midnight and breakfast are two of my favorite things, and Leo’s addresses both with class and finesse. Come out tonight and enjoy delicious food and friends before the start of finals!

Take a Break With Santa Tomorrow Night

Dreading the upcoming week of finals? Excited about the end of classes? Hungry for pancakes? Whatever the reason, get ready for Breakfast with Santa Claus tomorrow night. At 10 p.m. in the Great Room of the HFSC, InterHall will be serving up free pancakes, hot chocolate and coffee.

Maybe you think this event is beneath you. But you know who else loves pancakes?

The President.

Also, Santa will be there, as you can see in the letter below.

You won’t want to miss out on this — even if it’s just for a study break. All I’m hoping for is that DeGioia shows up in a red suit and a large white beard.

Hot Spots to Cool Off: Ted’s Bulletin

We’re on the back half of the first true heat wave of the summer. But today, with a forecast high of 100, we’re still forced to find some AC to avoid melting in the scorching heat outside. As with every day over 95, we here at 4E want to show you one awesome D.C. spot to escape the heat so you don’t have to turn into a useless, AC-dependent lump.

Today’s spot — Ted’s Bulletin. This is the spot for all you Capitol Hill folks who can brave a sweaty walk from Capitol Hill down to Eastern Market (or a quick Metro ride from Capitol South). But the walk is well worth it for this restaurant, notorious for all-day breakfasts, giant cheeseburgers and — the reason it’s our second Hot Spot to Cool Off — milkshakes. Both with or without alcohol.

Whether you’re looking for a full meal or for a quick (albeit fancy and pricey) milkshake, this is the perfect spot to cool off if you’re near the Hill today. And though we here at 4E appreciate a good “Walk of Shame Breakfast Burrito” (a real menu item — try it, it’s aweosme) at any time of the day (you can order that for dinner), the best reason to visit Ted’s on a day like today is a nice milkshake.

The milkshakes are awesome. (They should be — it’s $6.49 for a normal one and $8.99 for an alcoholic one.) But if any milkshake is worth such prices, this one would be it. Ted’s has 16 flavors of normal milkshakes — from chocolate and vanilla to apple pie and PB&J — so those of us under 21 have plenty to love. But for those lucky enough to be able to order an adult milkshake, this should be your drink of choice on this hot and humid Thursday.

The adult milkshakes are inventive (and, according to some over-21’s near us) were amazing. From the sounds of the menu, our favorite dairy drink concoctions include the Twisted Coconut (rum with flavors of coconut and either Key Lime Pie or Bananas Foster), the Nutty Professor (a peanut butter milkshake with hazelnut liqueur) and the Dirty Girl Scout (like a Thin Mint with peppermint schnapps). Just don’t get too carried away on the alcohol, especially on such a sticky day.

So, instead of heading straight home to the Hilltop after a long day at the Hill, stroll on down to Ted’s and get your Thirsty Thursday started off right — with some breakfast and a great milkshake.

Leo’s Gourmet: Healthy Breakfast

College students tend to make some unhealthy decisions. At this stage in our life we can absorb most of these poor dietary choices. Had too much to drink last night? Your metabolism can handle it so quickly that you only feel the effects for a few hours. Chicken Finger Thursday? No big deal for these 18-23 year-old digestive systems. Missed Yates for a couple of weeks? Odds are you haven’t put on any noticeable weight. As young people, we can usually get away with unhealthy choices. But, sooner or later, our poor health decisions will catch up to us.

But the unhealthy effects of a poor breakfast — or the lack of a breakfast — can negatively impact your health (and your day). And with the wonderful selection of sugary cereals, greasy meats and starchy bagels at Leo’s it can be difficult to make yourself a healthy and nutritious breakfast. Luckily, we’ve got you covered for the ideal balanced breakfast to get you started on your day, while still fitting into your meal plan.

Step 1: Yogurt parfait Grab some yogurt — no more than a couple of spoonfulls (Leo’s yogurt is more fattening than the more trendy Chobani variety). Head over to the cereal station and add in some Raisin Bran, Special K with Red Berries, Heart-to-Heart, or Chex (Avoid the sweeter cereals, and instead sweeten with honey.) Top off with slices of melon or banana.

Step 2: Breakfast sandwich Get an egg white at the omelet station. Grab one slice of wheat bread and toast it. Sparingly add hot sauce to the top.

Step 3: Fruit Grab a grapefruit half – resist the urge to add sugar!

Step 4: Wake-up beverage As a caffeine-free guy, I don’t necessarily understand the urge to wake up with a piping hot cup of coffee. But for those of you who need the jolt of piping hot caffeine, avoid adding too much sugar or creamer. If anything, keep the coffee additive to a bit of skim milk. If you really can’t stand the taste of coffee, switch to tea.

See if you can switch up your Leo’s routine and start your day off just a bit healthier than usual.
