Senior Memories: Things that Only Seniors Remember

As the first semester has begun to wind down, my nerves about leaving Georgetown in only a few months are increasing. I can barely remember my freshman year, the people I met then feel like people I have known my entire life. However, there are some things that have not been so permanent. From bars to fads, Georgetown has seen a bunch of turnover during the last three years.

So underclassmen, give me this one post to rant. And seniors, join me in my trip down memory lane.

Things Only Seniors Remember:

1. Tuscany’s. The pride and joy of our freshman year. If you didn’t sit on the sidewalk with a large slice, make friends with a stranger or get into a fight about who ordered first than you haven’t lived.

2. Rhino. Okay, some underclassman might remember this one. But, only we remember how magical Rhino was once upon a time. Do I miss the idea of it? Yes. Do I actually miss it? To be honest, not at all.

3. Shit Georgetown Girls Say. This video defined my freshman year, and I still recite it weekly. While I was heartbroken that these guys took this video down, I am still petitioning for them to bring it back. Favorite lines include:

  • “Does Rhino take Go-Card?”
  • “What to chase with, what to chase with.. Diet Coke, zero cals!”
  • “Betch I’m drunk in Leo’s I need your help.”
  • “He must be cute, he went to Delbarton.”
  • “Son of a betch where is my Go-Card?”

5. Reiss Pathway. As a former Darnallian, the Reiss Pathway was basically family to me. Best people watching and easy access to Leavy… what more could you want?! It makes me so incredibly sad that some people think that the construction has always been there. They don’t know the great things they have missed.

6. Omelet Lady. Feel free to correct me, as I have not been to Leo’s in a while, but I’ve heard that the omelet lady no longer exists? How does one get his or her omelet without the signature “getcha omelet” call? That was the only acceptable way to end a weekend.

7. New South before the Heal Fam Stu Cen. I had to explain to a freshman the other day what was in the HFSC’s place prior to its creation… and all I could say was nothing. It literally seems like that building sprung from nowhere. If only it had been around my freshman year, I probably would have been more inclined to study!

8. Leo’s Burrito Bowls. Ugh, back when Leo’s did so many things right. Their burrito bowls were my favorite thing. Like Chipotle, but from a meal swipe! You didn’t even have to pay extra for guac!!

9. Juicing ‘Cuse in 1 Season. Way back when Syracuse was in the Big East. We were so lucky to see 2 wins against ‘Cuse in only one season. Hopefully we can juice ‘Cuse again this year on Dec. 5!

10. Epi before it became a hotspot. My underclassman sources have informed me that Epi is the new “late night hot spot.” Back in my day, it was just a great place to get a quesadilla and chill with friends. I guess we can blame the loss of both Tuscany’s and Eat & Joy for this one!

CHIPOTLE ON WHEELS

How many times have you been sitting in your dorm room – wrapped up in blankets and avoiding your responsibilities – and thought to yourself, “Wow! I could really go for a Chipotle burrito right now.”

You immediately come up with 400 reasons not to go to Chipotle: it’s 0.56 miles away, it’s either too hot or cold, there’s a 10% chance of rain, you just put on your ugliest sweatpants…

Okay. We get it. But now, 4E is coming to the rescue with some AMAZING news: you can now order Chipotle directly to your dorm using the Postmates app!

While this news has been known to the lucky few for the last months (including one of our own bloggers; see below), we thought we’d go public with this tremendous information.

ShopHouse Bounceback: Buy a Burrito, Get a Free Bowl

We here at 4E have observed over the years that Georgetown students — us included — love Chipotle. And why shouldn’t they? It just makes sense that college kids’ would be obsessed with a place that sells relatively cheap, incredibly filling, delicious food.

Similarly, Chipotle’s sister, ShopHouse, serves up food inspired by Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, and has been offering promotion after promotion the past couple of months.

And now there’s a new one: Every Saturday in November — starting today — if you bring in a receipt from Chipotle (for a bowl, burrito, taco or salad) to any ShopHouse location from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., you will get a free ShopHouse bowl. That’s right. In exchange for going to Chipotle — something that is a part of many people’s weekly routines — you can get FREE FOOD!

Of course, as we’ve told you before, you can make your own bowl at ShopHouse (and with a Chipotle receipt, it’ll be free!). Or you can try one of the four new “House Favorites”, which are premade combinations designed to tantalize the taste buds. So grab your Chipotle receipt from Wednesday (we know you have them) and head on over to your local ShopHouse (2805 M Street NW) to get your free bowl.

4Eats: Surf’s Up and Chow Down

So, your post-school year plans have left you here in Washington for the summer. Maybe you’re here for a (hopefully paid) internship, a job at the RHO or summer classes at Georgetown.

Regardless, you’ll be here for three stress-free, relaxing and blissful months. You can finally go see a concert at Verizon Center without worrying about that calculus exam tomorrow, visit all the monuments at the Mall or spend the day at Six Flags America. All this going out means you’ll be eating out, and as a result, you’re probably happy that you won’t have to see the inside of Leo’s for a while.

Despite your love-hate relationship with O’Donovan’s on the Waterfront, you’ll soon realize that strolling over to Leo’s for some edible sustenance makes your wallet a lot heavier and a lot happier than eating out on the town. After a week of delicious culinary creations at some of the District’s finest restaurants, followed by several days of frozen meals and ramen, you’ll soon face a wallet reminding you to spend your last dollars wisely before the next paycheck (not to mention, you’ll probably have a stomach begging for real food instead of freeze dried noodles). That’s where we come in. Here at 4Eats, we’ll bring you out of your meal-deprived misery and offer some D.C. eatery ideas and recipes where you can get a real bang for your buck:

Surfside

With temperatures rising, what could cool you off more than a refreshing lunch at Surfside? Only a 20 minute walk up Wisconsin Avenue, Surfside offers a beach-inspired menu, making it a great place for a relaxed, summer hangout. Customers are transported to the oceanside as they dine on an open rooftop deck with a beach mural backdrop. Surfside’s menu includes a variety of tacos, quesadillas, burritos, salads and rice bowls, all with a tropical twist. Their salsas, moles, curries and guacamole add bold flavors to their dishes, leaving you wanting more. The best part? The portions are HUGE and nothing is more than $15.

Some mouth-watering entrees include:

Tahiti (taco)
Seared rare ahi tuna on flour tortillas with wasabi cream, sweet soy glaze and lime sesame salad

Harbour Island (taco)
Seasoned braised pork on corn tortillas with tomatillo sauce, cucumber radish slaw and queso fresco

Tobago (quesadilla)
Braised pork, grilled pineapple & jalapeno salsa, cilantro and jack and cheddar cheese

St. Bart’s (burrito)
Warm flour tortilla with blackened fish, romaine lettuce, fresh jalapeno, pico de gallo, avocado and fresh squeezed lime.

Surfside greens with grilled salmon, grilled corn, zucchini, goat cheese and cherry tomato with a tomato basil vinaigrette.

In Home Fish Taco Recipe

But here at 4Eats, we don’t endorse simply eating out every day. Summer at Georgetown means experimenting in the kitchen, especially if housing assigned you a Village B or townhouse on Prospect. Here’s a cheap and easy-to-follow recipe for fish tacos, a perfect home-cooked dinner to whisk you away to a surfside vacation:

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless and skinless tilapia fillets, cut into 2-inch pieces, rinsed and patted dry
  • Olive oil, salt and pepper
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons fresh salsa
  • 12 corn or flour tortillas, warmed
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cabbage
  • Optional garnishes: cheese, cilantro, lime, avocado

Directions

1. Heat broiler, with rack in highest position. Place fish on rimmed baking sheet; drizzle with olive oil & season with salt and pepper. Broil until fish is lightly browned on top, 5-10 minutes, until flesh is opaque throughout.
2. Meanwhile in a small bowl, mix sour cream with 2 tablespoons fresh salsa.
3. Divide fish evenly among tortillas and top with shredded cabbage, sour cream and fresh salsa.
