Leavey 421: Behind the Scenes of the Fashion Issue

The Hoya’s Spring fashion issue comes out in this Friday’s edition of the guide, but we have a behind the scenes teaser of the shoot. The spring fashion issue this year features the work of local designers, worn by student  models from Georgetown. Make sure to pick up a copy before you leave for Spring Break! Check out some scenes of the models getting ready (and a peek at the early part of the photo shoot) in the slideshow after the jump.

Leap Babies Unite

One extra day of February might not be the most celebratory of days (although it is according to last week’s episode of 30 Rock) but D.C. has one offer to make it extra special. But there’s a catch- it has to be your birthday.

IF YOU’RE A “LEAP BABY”…

Are you one of the poor few who only gets a true birthday every four years? You’re in luck today. Sprinkles (3015 M Street NW) will be giving out free cupcakes to Leap Babies from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oh and don’t think you can pull a fast one,  they’ll be giving your valid government I.D. Tombs-esque scrutiny. Cupcakes ain’t no joke.

IF YOU’RE NOT…

You can always check out your neighborhood Subway for the last day of $5 Foot longs. Once March 1st rolls around the FEBRUANY (nice pun, Subway…) deal will be history, at least until they decide the resurrect the annoying jingle.

The Neighbors Want You to Put a Shirt On

While the warm spell that we’ve been experiencing lately has brought students out of Lau and into the sunlight, some of our neighbors aren’t too happy about the way students are choosing to enjoy the weather. DCist uncovered a particularly funny nugget on a Georgetown listserv in which one resident described the menace of student sunbathing. Here’s what they had to say:

The joy of these recent beautiful, sunny days have been somewhat mitigated for me by the sight of bare-chested, boxer-shorted GU students sunbathing on their front stoop right out on the sidewalk. To add insult to injury, these men are sprawled out on old beat up lawn chairs. I am not talking about a real porch here, but rather the top stair of the front entrance of their run down student house. The sight is very down-market, low rent, college dorm and affects the property values of our homes in this section of Georgetown, as well as the pleasure of walking our charming streets. These people have a back yard! Let them use it for their sunbathing activities.

It is bad enough that the neighbors have to put up with the students’ relentless drunken and disorderly conduct, but to host a slew of Dewey Beach antics on our Georgetown streets is too much! They were recently flipping burgers on a barbecue grill out there, too!!

I hope that the off campus life office at GU requires their students to follow the rules of conduct required for living in a community of permanent residents and remind them that they ARE NOT LIVING ON CAMPUS!!!

It’s okay, not being invited to the barbecue would have made me upset too. So what’s the lesson we learn here? Limit  your tanning to Healy Lawn – it’s lowering property values.

Survive Spring Break 2012

Spring Break 2012 officially begins with the end of class this Friday, and many of you are leaving town for the beach, ocean, and spring break experience. While the image of lying in the sun sipping a pre-paid drink surrounded by thousands of other college spring breakers probably comes to mind, be forewarned that there is a reason this trip tends to be once in a lifetime. Your week will be one for the books, but that means making it back to Georgetown alive. Here’s a list of useful tips I wish I had  last year at this time, pre-Punta Cana:

  • Bring as many granola bars, bagels, and other packable snacks as possible. Do this, or you will probably be drinking on an empty stomach for the majority of your week. Feeding the college spring breakers tends to be far from the resorts’ top priority, so do yourself and your stomach a favor and bring a good amount of your own food.
  • Buy your suntan lotion before leaving. Unless you want to spend all of your money the first day on lotion, buy some at a pharmacy in D.C. The resorts know that they are your last option and can get away with charging obscene amounts. Also think about bringing some aloe — there’s a good chance someone on the trip is going to wake up with a wicked sunburn.
  • Make your first purchase a jumbo jug of water. It’s a safe bet that the water at your resort is not drinkable (and trust me, better safe than sorry). Leave this out before going out for the night as a reminder to drink that and not the water from your sink when you get back.
  • Bring your cheapest pair of sunglasses. You will lose them.

Georgetown – So Hot Right Now

Looks like Georgetown is making all the lists lately. From the most hipster to the preppiest, we’re all over the spectrum. Now we can add a new one to the list – Inside College has come out with a list of the hottest colleges in the nation, and we’re proud to say that Georgetown made the cut.

Unfortunately, the list has a misleading title, and it’s not referring to our really, really ridiculously good looks, but instead the university’s popularity with students. The experts over at Inside College say that the colleges on the list are “the place to be” for higher education.

Other schools that made the list of the 21 hottest colleges include Yale, NYU, Duke and our neighbors over at GW. A secondary list of “hot colleges” features the University of Chicago, Tufts and Stanford, to name a few.

Inside College doesn’t list the exact criteria their “experts” used to determine the hotness of a particular college, but we’re curious. Is it the D.C. area, with its prevalence of politicians and diplomats? Georgetown Day? Or maybe it actually does boil down to how attractive our student body is. What do you think makes us one of the hottest colleges in America?

Hoya History: The Notre Dame Rivalry

Ask any Hoya what Georgetown’s biggest rivalries are, and they will almost always tell you that they’re Syracuse and Villanova. But, with this year’s schedule robbing us of a home game against Syracuse, and a Villanova team near the bottom of the Big East standings, our rivalry games have been substantially weaker this year than before.

Until tonight, when Georgetown takes on No. 18 Notre Dame at  Verizon Center.

I know, I know, the Georgetown-Notre Dame rivalry is nowhere near as vitriolic as our against the other two squads. But, with Syracuse bolting for the ACC soon, Notre Dame might be the most logical school to take its place. For one, we’re both Catholic schools supported by different orders — Notre Dame is affiliated with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. For another, Georgetown and Notre Dame are always close in academic rankings. And, ask anyone here from the Midwest what schools they turned down in favor of Georgetown, and most will say Notre Dame. But for all that history, the rivalry with Notre Dame isn’t all that intense, right?
